The Enterprise follows the probe into the rift and arrives in the year 2063, one day before First Contact. Picard surmises the Borg are attempting to alter history by preventing Zefram Cochrane’s historic development of warp drive, which triggers first contact with the Vulcans.
Picard and the crew of the Enterprise defeat the Borg while Zefram Cochrane with assistance from Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge and Commander Will Riker achieve warp speed, which captures the attention of nearby Vulcans on a survey mission. The Vulcans change course and land in Montana to meet Cochrane.
Picard meets his clone, Shinzon, who was created by a former Romulan regime. The clone was meant to be a spy, but takes control of the Romulan Empire by assassinating its senate.
