5 Elements of PQ

The PQ Model contains 5 main elements. These elements have different neurobiological and behavioral correlates and they are dynamically applicable to professional conditions. They include:

Corporate

The ability to understand the mental processes of oneself and other people. It enables us to be aware of and manage our own as well as others’ emotions, thoughts, and intentions, thereby enabling us to communicate and interact with those around us. Men- talizing is what allows us to see the world from some- one else's point of view, un- derstand that people can have different perceptions compared to ours, and an- ticipate their future feelings and behaviors.

Team

The ability to control and manage the brain itself, including the planning and organizing of its many activities. These ac- tivities take place in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. The prefrontal cortex helps with plan- ning, organizing, con- trolling and synchroniz- ing complex bits of infor- mation.

Individual

Can be defined as the brain`s stability in perfor- mance. Our brains show some degree of fluctua- tion depending on inter- nal and external factors. For example, we can maintain our focus for long hours one day whereas we can be easily distracted the other day.

Individual

Can be defined as mental flexibility. It allows learn- ing new information or adapting to changing conditions. Every day, we are faced with different situations. Our jobs demand new solutions or to learn new things to continue performing well in our jobs.

Individual

Refers to the existence of a person as a professional. Professional-self can be viewed from two perspec- tives; internal and exter- nal. Internal professional self is about a person’s career goals, values, prin- ciples, work ethic, and in- terests. External profes- sional-self includes being a role model, creating a professional image in the eyes of others, and one’s professional network.

What is Professional Quotient

“Professional Quotient” (PQ) is a new psychomedical approach in the field of human resources management. It is developed in the light of recent neuroscientific data, new concepts in behavioral sciences, and medical facts.PQ is about mental abilities that are necessary for individuals, groups, or organizations to be successful in profes- sional life. It consists of 5 elements which provide a theoretical framework for pro- ductivity and success in professional life. The concept of Professional Quotient consti- tutes a systematic check-up instrument which also takes medical factors into consid- eration as an essential component of well-being at work.

The concept of Professional Quotient was first revealed in the book “Professional Quotient PQ for a Happy and Successful Professional Life” written (in Turkish) by Psy- chiatrist Prof. Dr. Hakan Yöney and published by Remzi Bookstore in 2007 (2nd Edi- tion 2014). For a preview please click.
